National History

Kappa Alpha Order was founded December 21, 1865 in Lexington, Virginia at Washington College (now Washington and Lee University). With the aspirations of James Ward Wood, William Nelson Scott, William Archibald Walsh, and Stanhope Mccelland Scott, our Order was sparked. Though in its young age, our Order was slowly developing through the tough times. In the fall of 1866, Samuel Zenas Ammen was initiated into the Alpha Chapter at Washington College where General Robert E. Lee was president of the school. Through diligent work and dedication, Ammen transformed the ritual into what we have today, and for this he is known as the Practical Founder of Kappa Alpha Order. With this group of men in Lexington, Virginia at the Alpha Chapter, these men sought to preserve the virtues of chivalry, respect for others, honor, duty, integrity, and reverence for God and women.

Today, Kappa Alpha Order strives to carry on the flame that was sparked by the likes of Wood, Scott, Walsh, and Scott as well as the ideals formed by our spiritual founder, General Robert Edward Lee.

Our National Administrative Office can be found at Mulberry Hill in Lexington, Virginia as it is now a Virginia Historic Landmark and is subject to historic preservation to the Commonwealth of Virginia.
